Growing Wellness: A Herbal Garden at Masjid Ahmad Ibrahim
Have you ever thought how nice it would be to have a little green space around the mosque something peaceful, beneficial, and meaningful?
That idea’s been growing in our minds too. And now, Masjid Ahmad Ibrahim is working on revamping its garden after covid struck (hey we won gold) and creating its very own Medicinal Herbal Garden a quiet, healing space just behind the mosque, where nature, tradition, and wellness come together.
A Garden Rooted in Community Care
Masjid Ahmad Ibrahim sits in the heart of Singapore’s northern region, under the care of NHG the National Healthcare Group. NHG is one of Singapore’s three public healthcare clusters, and it
looks after hospitals, polyclinics, and community health programs across the Central and North zones including Yishun.
More importantly, NHG has been placing strong focus on preventive health, mental wellness, and creating therapeutic community spaces. That got us thinking what if the mosque could contribute in its own way?
Why a Herbal Garden?

Many in our Malay-Muslim community face common health concerns like diabetes, hypertension, and stress. At the same time, more than 22% of residents here are seniors, many of whom grew up around traditional herbs and remedies.
The idea of a herbal garden felt like a natural next step something simple, yet meaningful, that could:
- Promote light physical activity and healthy living
- Introduce or reconnect people to herbs like Serai, Misai Kucing, Pegaga, and more
- Offer a beautiful, peaceful spot to wind down after prayers or between programs
It’s More Than Just a Garden
Beyond the plants, we hope this space will become:
- A small centre for mental calm and reflection
- A space for learning about traditional remedies and sunnah practices
- A place for volunteering, where youth and seniors alike can get involved and contribute
The dream started after a post raya gathering by NHG with a few conversations and reflections and with encouragement from those around, it started taking root. Now, it’s becoming a real plan we’re working towards it.
A Small Step, With a Big Picture in Mind
What’s special is how this idea fits nicely into NHG’s health goals things like preventive care, therapeutic landscapes, and helping communities take charge of their own well-being.
Mosques are trusted places. And this garden is one small way we can bridge spiritual care with physical and emotional wellness, in a way that feels right for our space and people.
What’s Next?
We’ve been blessed to receive 4 large donated planters to kick things off. But we’re still looking for at least 20 more to make it work. If all goes well, we’re targeting a launch by end-July 2025, insyaAllah. There’ll also be opportunities for those who love gardening, or just want to try something new, to volunteer and care for the space regularly. Interested?
drop your name and contact here : https://ahmadibrahim.sg/join-us/, and we’ll be in touch with our launch date, insha‑Allah.
If you’ve ever believed that healing comes in many forms through faith, through nature, through
community this is one of those moments where they all come together.
On a finale note would like to refer to a quote :
“Its better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener in a war”
and another short one :
“cangkul pon cangkul lah” – Hang Kebun
